It is with great sadness that the SA REIT sector mourns the passing of property maverick Marc Wainer.
A giant in the property sector, Marc is best known for founding and taking Redefine from a small property company to multinational investor and one of South Africa’s biggest and most respected JSE-listed real estate businesses.
However, over his stellar career, Marc was also involved in the leadership of many other successful property businesses, including several REITs, as well as mentoring many industry leaders. Marc played a key role in forging SA’s REIT sector as it stands today.
With his formidable knowledge of property and unique approach to deal-making, Marc was able to successfully structure, negotiate and execute the most complex deals, earning him the reputation of SA’s doyen of property deal-making.
Marc’s love for the sector extended to mentorship and a deep desire to give something of value back to South Africa, a country which he felt had given him so much. He viewed growing and mentoring the youngsters coming up in Redefine, across the property sector, and beyond, as both important and a privilege.
Marc’s passion for property and commitment to mentorship were only surpassed by his love of his family, who were his motivation, inspiration and reason for striving to be more every day.
“Marc was one-of-a-kind. He will be remembered and his legacy revered by his SA REIT colleagues, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Marc has left on indelible mark on the sector. We will miss our friend sorely. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Marc’s family,” says Estienne de Klerk, Chairman of the SA REIT Association.
