Morgan Cargo has chosen King Air Industria Cape Town as the location of its new headquarters and logistics base in the Western Cape.
Leading international company Morgan Cargo, which offers specialised perishable cargo logistics services in 16 countries, identified the 72ha King Air Industria Cape Town, which is just minutes from Cape Town International Airport, as the ideal base from which to get produce from grower to supermarket efficiently on behalf of its clients around the world.
The new tailor-made facility is being developed jointly by Morgan Cargo Properties and King Air Industria. The first business park of its kind in the Cape Town International Airport area, King Air Industria is being rolled out by leading property investors and developers Atterbury Property and Old Mutual Properties. The R3bn King Air Industria development represents a valuable private sector investment in South Africa and marks a significant contribution to the country’s economic recovery.
Morgan Cargo’s new turnkey facility will comprise a contemporary 1,300m2 provincial head office and a modern 6,000m2 cold storage facility, which will be used primarily for fresh fruit, fish and flowers with cold storage requirements ranging from zero to 10 degrees Celsius.
Smart planning integrates flexibility into the facility to cater to Morgan Cargo’s current needs, as well as its future requirements. Atterbury has emerged as specialists in the development of cold storage facilities and, to accommodate future growth, Morgan Cargo’s warehouse is cleverly designed to double in size and its single yard and docking system to convert into cross-docking, in future phases.
Schalk Bruwer, CEO of Morgan Cargo, says, “Morgan Cargo is excited about developing a new home for our Cape Town operation, and it is a privilege to undertake this project in partnership with Atterbury. We are honoured to be associated with the leading property developer in South Africa and look forward to working together. The new facility will give us the opportunity to serve our clients with world-class technology and to establish and maintain the cold chain that will present the best of South African produce to the world in a time-efficient manner.”
James Ehlers, Development Director for Atterbury, comments, “Morgan Cargo is a great addition to King Air Industria Cape Town. We couldn’t be more excited to work with this leading logistics business in what is the second significant deal at this landmark development.”
The Courier Guy has also committed to a 10,000sqm turnkey facility which is under development at King Air Industria, joining Morgan Cargo in leading a new wave of modern logistics in Cape Town.
Arno du Plessis, Atterbury’s development manager for King Air Industria Cape Town, reports, “As the development gains momentum, we are also seeing an increase in demand for facilities. We count ourselves as privileged to be associated with the high calibre of businesses it is attracting and are pleased to be able to provide them with homes near to the airport. The location is uniquely well matched for companies that export and import fresh produce, and its excellent security and access to the N2 highway are compelling propositions for logistics and transport companies.”
The development of King Air Industria creates quality space for local and multinational businesses that prioritise being close to the Cape Town International Airport and value easy access to major arterial roads. King Air Industria is on a prime site between Airport Approach, Borcherds Quarry, Robert Sobukwe and Pallotti roads. It benefits from the city’s extensive upgrades to Robert Sobukwe and Borcherds Quarry roads, and the developers are investing in upgrades to King Air Industria’s surrounding roads. King Air Industria offers excellent traffic flows in the region via the N2 highway.
The King Air Industria Cape Town site allows for the development of 280,000m2 of facilities, with its buildings ranging from 2,500m2 to 150,000m2. The park is supported by all the on-site infrastructure and security features necessary for high-performance businesses.
Construction has already commenced on the new Morgan Cargo facility, which is set to begin operating in September 2021. The construction of King Air Industria’s infrastructure started in October 2019 and, notwithstanding the lockdown business disruption, its initial phase remains on track for completion in March 2021.
King Air Industria’s development extends Atterbury 26-year track record of delivering excellent property development, investment and asset management solutions in South Africa and internationally.
